‘Proud’ Katie Holmes will miss being in ‘close proximity’ to daughter Suri as she heads to college
Katie Holmes has mixed emotions about her new life as an empty nester.
In an interview with Town & Country published Tuesday, the “Dawson’s Creek” alum revealed she has thrown herself into creative pursuits — such as a book club, dance classes and painting — to keep busy now that her daughter, Suri, is headed to college.
Despite wading into unknown territory, Holmes said she is so “proud” of her daughter, who starts her freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University this fall.
“Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy,” she told the outlet.
The actress reflected on her own experience of going to college at Columbia University and how transformative it was for her — and she wishes the same for her daughter.
“I remember being this age, this time of beginnings,” she continued. “It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.”
Suri has lived with her mother in New York City for nearly her entire life and has virtually no relationship with her famous father, Tom Cruise.
Although Holmes has done her best to keep Suri’s private life out of the public eye, her college choice was revealed on TikTok in May.
One of the 18-year-old’s classmates posted a since-deleted video for “commitment day,” showing Suri proudly rocking a Carnegie Mellon sweatshirt.

However, Holmes did not confirm where her daughter is headed or what she will be studying amid rumors she is interested in fashion or acting.
With her daughter out of the house, the “Batman Begins” star joked she may have to ramp up her monthly book club meetings.
“The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me,” she said with a laugh. “I’ll be like, ‘Let’s meet once a week.’”
Per the school’s website, first-year orientation starts next week, meaning Suri is likely packing her bags and heading to Pittsburgh within the next week.
However, Holmes may have to check her daughter’s suitcases for any missing clothing before she leaves.
In June, the “First Daughter” star joked about Suri’s tendency to borrow her clothes in an interview with the Sunday Times.
“I’ve saved some things here and there,” Katie told the outlet. “But she has her own sense of style and her own expressions.”
“[But] sometimes the basics definitely disappear,” she added. “But that’s fine.”
Suri was spotted wearing her fashionable mom’s Pony M-100 Low Vintage Sneakers ($100) while out and about in NYC earlier this month.
The teen wore the orange-and-blue kicks with an all-black ensemble but added a bit more flare with a red shoulder bag and a leopard-print umbrella.
Holmes typically styles the fun shoes with even more color. In May, she color coordinated with baggy blue pants and a lemon yellow sweater atop a baby blue undershirt. She tied it all together with an orange shoulder bag.
Suri has also been spotted wearing some of her mom’s cozy outerwear, such as her go-to denim jacket.
